SENIOR RESEARCHER

SIMONA RUŢĂ is senior researcher (part time) and founder of the HIV International Research Center (affiliated to the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative, Texas, Houston, USA) in Stefan S Nicolau Institute of Virology. She is Professor of Virology and Vice-Rector for scientific research at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and PhD coordinator at the Romanian Academy.  

Her main fields of research are the clinical evolution and molecular epidemiology of blood borne transmitted viral infections, with a particular interest in pediatric HIV and viral hepatitis (the antigenic heterogenicity of HIV strains circulating in Romania; emergence of HIV/HBV/HCV strains resistant to antiretrovirals, the impact of HIV on the central nervous system), as well as the virologic monitoring of emerging neurotropic arboviral diseases.

Simona Ruta is member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Vicepresident of the Romanian NITAG (National Immunisation Technical Advisory Group), Executive Vicepresident of the Romanian Society for Microbiology and member of the Educational Subcomittee of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (and ESCMIDa)s well as of the ESCMID study groups for Viral hepatitis, vaccines and molecular diagnosis.
