1. Viral infections with a major impact on public health (HIV infection, viral hepatitis, flu, CNS infections, emerging viruses).
2. Mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of viral infections (viral infections in non-communicable diseases).
3. Molecular and cellular biology (including genetic and epigenetic factors) in human pathology.
4. Immunology, especially the subfield of tumor immunology.
5. Modulation of some biological processes.
6. Biotechnology/nanomedicine (in vitro studies on the biological effects induced by nanoparticles loaded with drugs/natural compounds).
7. Biology of tumor stem cells; the study of multiple drug resistance; in vitro studies on immunotherapeutic approaches in cancer.
8. Medical applications of new technologies (NGS-next generation sequencing, ChIP immunoprecipitation of chromatin, microarray).
9. Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics.

Simona Ruţă is Professor of Virology and Vice-Rector for scientific research at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, principal investigator, department for Emerging Viral Diseases, Ştefan S. Nicolau Institute of Virology and founding director of the International Center for research in the field of HIV/AIDS affiliated to the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative, Texas, Houston, USA. She is corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences and member of the Educational Subcomittee of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Her main fields of research are the molecular epidemiology of HIV and viral hepatitis infections (antigenic heterogenicity of HIV strains circulating in Romania; emergence of HIV/HBV/HCV strains resistant to antiretrovirals), the impact of HIV on the central nervous system and the evolution of neurotropic emergent viral diseases. Author of over 100 articles indexed in international data bases, 54 in the Clarivate/ISI database with a cumulative factor >90 and more than 1000 citations. Project director or member in the research team of more than 30 national and international grants.

Education: B.S from University of Polytechnics from Bucharest, Faculty of Chemistry, Biochemistry Department (now, Biochemistry Faculty from University of Bucharest) (in 1984); PhD fellow at Centro Regionale Oncologico di Aviano, Italy, in the Advanced Immunotherapy Department (1993-1996); PhD in Biology, Biochemistry specialization, since 1999. Present position – Head of the Center of Immunology from Stefan. S. Nicolau Institute for Virology (IVN) (since 2000), Senior Researcher (Ist degree, since 2006), PhD supervisor in Medicine (Immunology sub-domain, since 2006). Member of the Romanian Society of Immunology (affiliated to IUIS, EFIS, BAIS – since 1996), the Romanian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (affiliated to FEBS – since 2000), the Romanian Society for Cytometry (affiliated to ISAC – since 2008). Domains of interest: immunology, especially tumour immunology (biomarkers; tumour resistance; apoptosis; cancer stem cells), immunotherapeutical aproaches in cancer, molecular biology, nanomedicine (nanoparticles, organometallic and bioactive compounds), natural compounds. Technical skills and competences: cell cultures; cell-, complement- and drug-mediated cytotoxicity assays; ELISA; flow-cytometry techniques (apoptosis, cell cycle, antigen expression); Real-Time Cell Analysis (RTCA); RT-PCR approaches; SDS-PAGE/ Western blotting. Scientific activity: co-author of 1 book, 5 book chapters, 1 research patent, 57 published papers (30 ISI journals and 29 in peer-reviewed scientific journals); over 250 oral presentations and posters since 2005, presented in national (114) and international (142) conferences, and published as abstracts. Research activity focused on: tumor biomarkers (expression, functional roles); modulation of biomarker expression, biologic activities and signal transduction pathways by cytokines, natural compounds, anti-cancer drugs, nanoparticles; multi-drug resistance; imortalization of tumor cells from solid tumors; cancer stem-like cell cultures and characterization; complement regulators; apoptosis and cell-cycle key regulators. Management activities: Director/partner in national scientific projects; member of management council/team in European funded research projects (COST, POC, POS-CCE).The research abilities and good experience were acumulated in managing 3 international projects (1 as co-director, 2 as member of Management Council) and 16 national projects (11 as director, 5 as responsible partner); as a team member in 7 international projects and over 23 national research grants.
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY – PhD supervisor – Gabriela Anton, PhD
Anton Gabriela, principal investigator, Molecular Virology Department, „Stefan S Nicolau” Institute of Virology, PhD supervisor in the field of medicine at the Romanian Academy. The research areas of interest cover genetic and epigenetic modifications in human pathologies and medical applications for „omic” technologies. Has authored over 200 scientific papers and communications (h index – 11), over 750 citations, out of which 500 in 2016 alone; project leader and team member in over 25 competition won projects; member of Romanian Biochemestry and Molecular Biology Society (FEBS affiliated), of Romanian Immunology Society (IUIS, EFIS and BAIS affiliated) and since 2005 member of European Association of Cancer Research (EACR); project evaluator for national and international competitions (EuroNanoMed).

Academician Victor Voicu is the vicepresident of Romanian Academy Science since 2018, member of the Romanian Academy since 2001 (corresponding since 1991), president of Toxicology and Toxicodependence Commission in Ministry of Health (1998-2015), president of Scientific Council in Romanian National Medicine Agency (1997-2009). He is a university professor of Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology and Psychopharmacology at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and the President of the Romanian Society of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Clinical Toxicology and also, member of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the American Chemical Society, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. In 2005, he received the title of Doctor honoris causa from the “Ovidius” University in Constanta and the “Vasile Goldiş” University in Arad. On December 1, 2017 acad. Victor Voicu was decorated by the Presidency of Romania with the National Order “Steaua României” in the rank of Commander. Academician Victor Voicu is the author of over 20 monographic volumes, 300 published and communicated scientific works and holds almost 30 invention patents.

Daniela Manuc, PhD Professor at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Public Health Discipline. As responsibilities, Professor Manuc coordinates the activity of doctoral students and residents in the specialty Public Health and Management, coordination of undergraduate theses. Professor Manuc developed a series of works in the field of dental practice, as well as public health management and the ethics of medical professions in relation to patients. Between 2015 and 2017 she was Director – Senior Advisor in the Ministry of European Funds/ Ministry of Labor and Social Protection/ MDRAPFE – Management Authority for Sectoral Operational Program Human Resources Development/ General Directorate of Human Capital Programs. In 2016, was Head of Program Implementation and Coordination Unit – Ministry of Health. Between 2012 and 2016, was Deputy General Director of the Ministry of European Funds/Ministry of Labor and Social Protection – Management Authority for the Human Resources Development Sectoral Operational Program. Between 2001 and 2009 was Deputy General Director/ Head of the Program Implementation and Coordination Unit/ Director of Public Health – Ministry of Health.

- the bibliographic list with the specialized literature studied for the admission interview;

- proposal regarding the doctoral thesis to be developed and a brief presentation of to it – 1.2 pages (Standard document 3)
- employee certificate if the candidate is employed;
- for foreign citizens – the certificate of linguistic competence regarding the knowledge of the Romanian language/or to submit certificates/diplomas proving at least 4 consecutive years of studies in Romania.

STRUCTURE OF THE DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAM
Doctoral university studies are planned for a period of 4 academic years and include:
A training program based on advanced university studies, completed within a doctoral school and made up of activities carried out in institutionalized study formations; the advanced university training program is carried out during the first year of doctoral studies and consists of: courses, personal study based on a fixed bibliography, participation in seminars or laboratory activities. The advanced university training program is recognized when the doctoral student accrues 60 credits per year.

An individual scientific research/artistic program. This program requires active participation in one or more scientific projects initiated by the doctoral supervisor, conducted within institutes or research centers affiliated with the Romanian Academy. This research program is recognized when the doctoral student accrues 180 credits distributed over the years of study as follows:
- Year II: 60 credits (scientific research activity, progression report I, scientific report I).
- Year III: 60 credits (scientific research activity, progression report II, scientific report II).
- Year IV: 60 credits (scientific research activity, progression report III, scientific report III, the assessment of dissemination indicators, and preparation for the doctoral thesis defense before the guidance committee).
